Award-winning creative growth agency Carswell Gould is encouraging businesses across the South to use this year’s Earth Overshoot Day, which was on 30 July, as an opportunity to rethink how they market their organisations and the impact they have on the world around them.
Earth Overshoot Day marks the point each year when humanity’s demand for natural resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in a year, highlighting the growing need for businesses to adopt more sustainable ways of operating.
For Carswell Gould, the date reflects a wider shift in business expectations, with organisations increasingly recognising that customers, employees and investors expect brands to demonstrate genuine purpose alongside commercial success.
The agency recently launched Impact, a new framework developed to help organisations create more responsible, transparent and effective marketing that delivers both business growth and positive environmental and social outcomes.
Created in partnership with B Corp sustainability specialists The Pollinators, Impact supports organisations in embedding sustainability into their communications, campaigns, events and brand strategy while strengthening trust and long-term performance.
The launch builds on Carswell Gould’s own sustainability journey. Over the past year the Southampton agency has introduced renewable energy across its operations, adopted more sustainable suppliers and incorporated lower-impact thinking into its creative and strategic processes.
Gareth Miller, Managing Director at Carswell Gould, said:
“Businesses across Hampshire and the South are already doing some fantastic work to reduce their environmental impact, but many are still asking how they communicate that authentically and responsibly.
“Earth Overshoot Day is a reminder that every organisation has an opportunity to think differently about the decisions it makes. Marketing isn’t just about promoting products or services – it influences behaviour, shapes expectations and helps define what good business looks like.
“Through Impact, we’re helping organisations make marketing part of the solution. By combining commercial thinking with responsible practice, businesses can strengthen their brands, build trust and create lasting value for customers and communities alike.”
Carswell Gould is already putting the principles behind Impact into practice, including developing a fully modular, reusable exhibition stand for Hampshire-based client Wildflower Co., designed using repurposed materials and low-impact construction methods to minimise waste while supporting the client’s mission to restore biodiversity.
The agency hopes Earth Overshoot Day will encourage more businesses across the region to see sustainability not as a standalone initiative, but as an integral part of how they communicate, innovate and grow.
Lizzie Walker-Arnott, Carswell Gould’s sustainability champion, added:
“Every marketing decision creates an impact. Whether it’s the materials we choose, the stories we tell or the campaigns we create, we all have an opportunity to make more considered choices. That’s what Impact is all about – helping organisations create meaningful change while building stronger, more resilient brands.”
As one of the South’s leading integrated marketing agencies, Carswell Gould believes the region is well placed to become a leader in responsible business, combining innovation with sustainable growth to create long-term benefits for people, places and the planet.
